Dwyane Wade’s ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches recently requested that their daughter Zaya’s legal name and gender reassignment stay until she turns 18.
In court documents obtained by Today, Funches claimed that “our child should be given the opportunity to decide for himself at the age of majority whether he wishes to proceed with the change of name and/or sex”.
She apparently raised concerns in court that Wade “may be pressuring our child to go ahead with the name and gender change in order to take advantage of the financial opportunities he has received from companies and that he will receive according to [his] statements to me, based on our child’s name and/or gender reassignment. »
Although Zaya has been publicly known as trans for over two years now, Funches seems to think her father is controlling her for a check.
Wade released an official statement to the contrary, clearing his messy ex-wife in the process:

“Since this must be the new way of parenting, I guess I have to address these allegations here, which is a shame,” he begins.
“While none of us are surprised by Siohvaughn’s attempt to grapple with Zaya’s identity and her unwavering attempt to drag my name through the mud, I am very disappointed that she continually finds ways to center herself on HIS needs, regardless of his children.”
He goes on to detail Funches’ seemingly absent parenting, writing, “She didn’t go to school, recital, graduation, school dance, play date, practice, parent-teacher conference, etc., and Zaya gave her every opportunity to try to get to know her. She won’t.
“I’m not going to sit on my hands this time and allow him to mock my devotion to my family. The high road is running out of real estate.
He punctuates the last line with a devastating read: “Good luck to the 14th lawyer as they attempt to unravel the book of lies sold to them.”

We already love to see a father supporting a trans child, but throwing shade on his behalf? This is the behavior of the king.

Mind you, he wrote all of this on a wonderful birthday trip to Tanzania for his wife, Gabrielle Union. Some suspect she contributed a few lines (after all, we know she can have a sharp tongue).
