Yes, you can turn off always-on display on iPhone 14 Pro. here’s how

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max both feature a new always-on and efficient display. Instead of turning off when your phone is not in use, your lock screen wallpaper dims, keeping the date, time, widgets, and other important information on your screen illuminated.

This is a welcome new feature for the iPhone (especially since Samsung Galaxy phones have it since 2016), but not everyone is happy with the AOD.

Despite Apple claiming the AOD uses “minimal power”, some iPhone 14 Pro users have taken to Twitter to complain about it. battery drain issues with it. Others are unhappy its luminosityespecially when it charges at their bedside at night.

How does always-on display work?

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models both feature 120Hz ProMotion displays, which means your screen refreshes 120 times per second. The higher the refresh rate, the smoother, crisper, faster and more responsive your screen is, which is good, but it consumes quite a bit of power.

Although the iPhone 13 Pro models have the same 120Hz ProMotion displays, they don’t have the option to change their refresh rates. Only the iPhone 14 Pro models are able to dip their displays down to as low as 1Hz and only refresh once per second, enabling dark, power-efficient AOD.

Always-on display turns off temporarily

Despite its name, the AOD will turn off occasionally. Apple has a list of cases where the screen is completely off in order to save battery:

• Your iPhone is face down
• Your iPhone is in your pocket or bag
• Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
• Your iPhone is connected to your Apple Watch and you walk away.
• Your iPhone is idle for a period of time (according to Apple, your iPhone learns your patterns and automatically turns off the AOD)
• Sleep focus is on
• Low power mode is enabled
• You are using the Continuity Camera

How to Disable Always-on Display Completely

All of the above situations will temporarily disable AOD, but there is a way to manually disable the new iPhone feature if you’re not a fan.

In the Settings app, navigate to Display and Brightnessscroll to the bottom and turn off Always on.
